| 1. Students have received a Course Syllabus which outlines the State Standards (and objectives) for this course of study. 2. Students have been placed in a group. Each group has selected 6 of the standards. It is their job to throughly research each of the standards and present a project which addresses each of the levels as described in the State Standards. Since nearly half of the class will be in the Library during class, students must be mature enough to be self motivated to complete the task on their own without the immediate supervision of the teacher. The teacher will work with each group as needed. I will explain each standard and give suggestions on possible ways to present the standard to the class. The group will then present their project to the class. In this way, all state standards will be presented to all students. I will also lead a dicussion about the topic to ensure that the students have been taught each of the standards. 3. Projects are defined as: Any presentation as long as it has been approved by the teacher. Projects may include, but is not exclusive to, writing a paper, interviews, bulletin boards, posters, or a debate. Students have been encouraged to be creative and to have fun completing the requirements for this class. I will allow two of the groups each day to go to the Library to do research. Students who may be very serious about doing a good job may require additional time at home to search the internet or printed media that parents may have at home. 4. Grades will first be based on their success in meeting all three levels outlined in the state standards. If the group meets level 1, a grade of "C" will be achieved. If level 2 is reached, a grade of "B" will be achieved. If level 3 is reached, a grade of "A" will be achieved. The qualifty of the project will determine the actual numerical grade each group will receive. Parents are encouraged to review the State Standards to better understand what is required by the students. In addition, students will receive individual grades for current events and exams as stated below. 5. Due Dates. The three (3) remaining standards are due: October 24 - Group 1 & 2 October 31 - Group 3 & 4 November 7 - Group 1 & 2 November 14 - Group 3 November 21 - Group 4 December 5 - Group 1 & 2 December 12 - Group 3 & 4 6. Exams. There will be an open-book mid-term. It will be based on the material that is included in the final unit of the American History book which addresses contemporary issues. Students do have access to the textbook. The final exam will consist of questions based on the State Standards and will be comprehensive. Students should formulate well thoughtout answers which will show their understanding of the standards. The answers will be short written answers and should cover the standard satisfactorly. Correctness will be based on their ability to write sentences that show their understanding of the standards. No deduction will be made for spelling or grammatical errors; however, spelling and grammar can be a factor if their sentences cannot be read and understood. 7. Current Events. Students are required to keep up with current events. Each student will present an item of current news to the class on Thursday/Friday. Afterward 1 or 2 weeks, the students will join the Journalism Class in the preparation of current events at the local, state, national, and international level for the weekly 10 minute newscast which will be presented to the student body via close-circuit television. Students of each group will need to have thier news items ready for review and rewrite on Monday of each week. On Tuesday, the students will rehearse their broadcast and make adjustments as needed. Wednesday the students will have one more rehearsal if time allows and then they will join the Journalism Class for the actual taping. Students may decide among themselves who will perform the various duties. For example, two students may to the research and writting of the news items. Another student may act as director/producer. Two students will be on cameria while one or two students are holding up the prompts for the broadcast students to read. It is very important that each student pulls his or hers own weight. If not, students may receive a lower grade than the rest of their group. Broadcast Schedule: Nov 3-5 - Group 2 Nov 10-12 - Group 3 Nov 17-19 - Group 1 Dec 1-3 - Group 4 Dec 8-10 - Group 2 8. Parents are encouraged to discuss the standards and topics with the student. Your input could be the insight your child needs to fully understand and appreciate the holistic interactions of events in the world and how it impacts their lives. |
