VISION STATEMENT:
The McKenzie Elementary School Staff believes that all children can reach their educational potential in a safe and orderly environment. All children will be given the opportunity to attain his/her basic skills, and realize the joys of learning through hands on activities, creative problem solving, critical thinking skills, exploration and discovery.

MISSION STATEMENT:
To engage all students in active learning by providing opportunities resulting in the student being able to successfully demonstrate attainment of his/her individual curricular standards.

BELIEFS:
We believe that all children learn best when a clear focus is placed on academics; in a safe and nurturing environment that promotes respect for self and others; when challenged to explore, discover, and develop risk-taking and problem solving skills.

OBJECTIVES:

1. To master the academic skills and tools needed in order to be successful in life.

2. To provide experiences that promote respect for others, self, and government and to function successfully in a complex society.

3. To provide opportunities and guidance for students to achieve self-discipline, to accept responsibility for ones actions and to take pride in a job well-done.

CERTIFICATIONS:

All staff and faculty at MES are CPI certified, Crisis Prevention Institute.

VISITORS:

All visitors need to register in the office upon entering the building. Students will not be allowed to have visitors at the school during the school day. No student visitor is allowed to attend class with a friend or relative. Parents/Guardians are always welcome. Anyone who wishes to come to a classroom or the cafeteria during the school day needs to obtain a pass from the office. School personnel will then know that you are authorized to be in the building. Otherwise, they will stop visitors and ask them to return to the office. The safety of our children comes first. This also ensures that the normal routine of education is interrupted as little as possible.

DISCIPLINE/DISCIPLINE POLICY:

To guarantee a good social and educational climate, it is important that students understand that acceptable standards of behavior will be expected and will be administered fairly, but firmly when any individual's action interferes with the right of teachers to teach and students to learn. Any teacher or staff member in the school has the right to correct students at any time or any place.

CONFERENCES:

Teachers will be happy to arrange a conference. The report card has a space available for parents to mark if a conference is needed after report cards are handed out. If a conference is needed at a time other than report card time, please call the school and set up a time to visit. Teachers are available for conferences. By calling ahead, you will know if the teacher has scheduled someone else at the same time you would like to meet. Teachers may hold conferences during the school day only if scheduled in advance at a time when students are not in the room.

SUGGESTIONS FOR PARENTS:

Instruction is a responsibility shared by teachers and parents. Parents are their child's first teacher and never stop helping their child to learn to live in the world around them. Here are some suggestions for helping your child during the school year:

1. Set a good example. If you are interested in your child's schoolwork, your child will be too. Set aside sharing time.

2. Listen to your child - read to him/her; let your child read to you; encourage him/her to ask questions; discuss ideas with your child.

3. See that your child follows rules and attends school regularly.

4. Communicate often with the teacher (Set up conferences other than regularly scheduled parent-teacher conferences).

5. Visit interesting places together like museums, a zoo, libraries, historical sites, parks, etc. Discuss them and what was learned.

6. Select safe, educational toys - choose some that need to be put together and share that with them.

7. Play games with educational value such as number games, word games, and guessing games.

8. Encourage your child to play with other children.

9. Attend parent-teacher conferences every time.

10. Limit TV watching and agree on a regularly scheduled homework/study time.

11. Be sure your child gets plenty of sleep and a good breakfast to fuel the body and mind for the school day.

12. Give him/her plenty of TLC and praise whenever possible.
